I have a design I adapted from other robot sources. It uses IR. right now
the sensor is being tested along with the BS/L board I designed. I can send
you a copy of the schematic and board, if you'd like.

We have several Infra-Red sensors that would do the trick. If you
just need to detect the presence of an object within a certain
preset range, then our IRODS kit is for you. If you want an actual
range to an object (4" to 36"), then the DIRRS kit is more the thing.
Both are available as singles or in 4-paks. See
http://www.hvwtech.com/sensors.htm for more info. Parallax also
carries these so ask your local Parallax distributor about them.
