I just interfaced my stamp to a 8243 I/O expander chip while not the
best chip it does have some advantages. There are 16 outputs using 5
stamp pins, (this is not an advantage) there are four outputs per port
with four ports, these ports are tri-stated, they allow you to read
the input/output pins as well as write. There are three write modes,
OVERwrite, AND write, OR write. They sink or source current, they are
outdated by today's standards, Jameco has them in stock ( a bit pricey
at $3 something )
