Interesting Stepper Motor Question

Can I run a (27V, 4 Phase, 36 Ohm, 6 wire) stepper motor at a higher
voltage? It will only run for short periods of time. I am using a
LB1205 and my BS2 to drive it. I am hoping my stepper has enough
strength for my project (see below).

Also, does anybody know of a good, cheap place to get Powerful
stepper motors?

My project is to automate my sliding screen door. I did this a long
time ago with half a FastTrax gear box, and an IR sensor. There is a
fishing line strung across the length of the door and it wraps around
a type of gear that turns when the motor runs. so when you interrupt
the IR beam, the motor runs, and the the door is pulled open or
closed. It worked suprisingly well for many years but was somewhat
noisy and it eventually wore out. Now I want to give the whole
project a new design and give it some brains, Basic Stamp. :-) I
just need a stepper motor that can do what the Fast Trax gear box
could do and a a reasonably fast speed. Any comments, opinions,
help? Thanks!

For a place to get steppers I would suggest you try Dan Mauch at Camtronics
( http://www.seanet.com/~dmauch/ ). Dan has written a few articles for Nuts
and Volts regarding home shop CNC and sells controller kits and motors for
VERY reasonable prices. Tell him I sent you.

What you want to drive a stepper at a high speed with reasonable torque is
to start with a motor that has a low voltage rating. Ideally 2 - 3 volts.
This will give you a unit with low inductance. Then you need to drive it
with very high voltage to get around the remaining inductance. But, to keep
from burning up the motor you want to use a chopper type bipolar driver.
These sense and limit the current the motor sees while using a much higher
voltage than the motor is rated for. 10 time over voltage is normal.
