Hello all

Any ideas in speech recognination ?? with basic stamp?
and any sites where i can get applications of BASIC STAMP?
and ideas of interfacing the basic stamp with the·computer and use the computer to exectue commands and let it trigger the moters in the basic stamp directly..

Just wanted to say hello to you all and introduce myself. My name is Cy
Brown and I live down south in Natchitoches Louisiana. I work for an ISP
and administer the Lan and Wan there. My good friend gave me a basic stamp
starter kit for Christmass and so far its been a blast. I will try to avoid

I have the Board of Education here and its all working fine but can someone
tell me how the white plastic section full of holes is used?

Ha! That's a good one. Haven't head that before. Don't worry you'll learn.
Most people refer to that as a "bread-board" - maybe because of the holes
... I don't know. Anyway, the holes are connected in rows. It allows you to
plug in components - resistors, capacitors, ICs, LEDs, etc., etc. and test
circuits.

Question? Is it recommended to use a capacitor between V+ and Gnd like in a
normal microprocessor?

I found this group just the other day and joined. I have known about basic
stamps for
quite a while but never had an opportunity to have a need to try one. Well a
few weeks
ago I did. I am a Engineering Maint. Supervisor for a CBS affilate TV station.
We needed to
come up with a "cheap" way of making an automated "second" channel on our
HD/ATSC
stream using some sort of automation. I needed a way to emulate a "human"
hitting a
take button on a video switcher. We have Pro-Bel TX 420 systems. ( 3 ). The
guy at pro-
bel recommended a basic stamp to do the job.. I jumped on it since I always
wanted to
play with one.. So I bought a BS2 and the board ( starter kit ).. I have been
fiddling around
since last Tuesday and since I'M NOT A PROGRAMMER I started to get a little
frustrated!!
In college I learned assembly for 8080's and Z80's and enough Fortran and Turbo
Pascal to
be REALLY dangerous! :)

So I found this group and thought I would be asking stupid newbie questions, but
low and
behold this afternoon, I MADE IT WORK!! These things are so cool..

Basically what I need to do is upon power up, send a hex string to the
automation port
saying "hey, automation is alive and well.."..

Send a reminder every 20 seconds or so, "hey, I'm still here"..

Have a contact closure from another device trigger the stamp to spit out FF 01
hex that
tells the switcher to hit the take button when called for..

I actually got this working and It made my Friday afternoon!!

I will probably ask some stupid newbie questions since I see a LOT of
possibilites for these
things in the broadcast tv world..

If there are any other TV engineers here that have used these I would like to
hear what you
did with them. I see anything from camera controls ( pan, tilt, zoom ) to
remote controls
using rs-422 sony protocols.. and more.. Again we have Pro-Bel 420's and the
protocol is
pretty simple..

Just wanted to say hi to the group and this is gonna be cool..

Welcome to the group and the world of BASIC Stamps, Alan. I used a BS2
a couple years ago to create a silence monitor for radio stations [I was
contracted to do the job prior to working for Parallax]. The project
served as a remote alert in the event of too much "dead air."

Have fun. You'll find lots of very friendly, very helpful folks
participating in this group.
