Switching 24V @ 50+A?

Hi all,
A colleague of mine is working on a project that requires
switching a high amperage DC motor on and off. Nothing high frequency -
just on and off. It pulls 50 Amps when running, but the surge at startup is
about 200 amps. I've used crydom hockey puck type relays for switching AC
loads up to 25A, but nothing DC. Is there a solid state solution for this?

All input appreciated, Duncan

    Duncan:
IR lists a power mosfet, IRF1010NS rated 55 volts, 60-84 amps, (temperature
dependent). Four of these could be paralled, but they need 10-12 volts gate
drive. Diode clamping would be needed for protection at turn-off.

    Hello Duncan,

You may want to try an N-channel MOSFET with an on-resistance specification
of less than 10milliohms, a rated current of about 100Amps continuous, and a
maximum power dissipation of at least 75Watts. A good part number would be
the IFRP064N from International Rectifier. You would need to heat sink the
part to dissipate 20 Watts of heat however.
