We obtained very good relults simply with two photodiodes, and two phototransistors.
This way you make a pair of sensors that·don't need a constant light intensity.
The sensors separation·must be smaller than the line wide.
If you need more info, i.e. schematics, I could send an attachment to YOU EXCLUSIVELY.

I did what Victor said.
I upload the schematics on the eGroups page:
··· http://www.egroups.com/group/basicstamps
This references are for the schematics:
D1;D2 photodiodes (infrared)
T1;T2 phototransistors
You have to adjust the circuit with the potentiometer Pot, to obtain a zero in Black and a one in White.
If the Pot is out of range you could change its value. The pot value depends on the parameters of your semiconductors.
The printed circuit board (P.B.) must be at about 1 cm from the floor (depending on the size of your semiconductors).
We used recicled semiconductors from PC floppy disk drives and PC mouses.
