IR Object detection

I'm building the circuit for the IR Object Detection on the BOE-BOT. I have
an emitter/detector pair where the detector only has 2 pins instead of the
three indicated in the schematics (pg. 52 in the robotics manual).
Can I use the 2-pin detector in the same fashion as the 3-pin? And if so,
how are the 2 pins connected on the breadboard?
