rainfall transducers

I'm interested in building some specialized rainfall
quantitative & qualitative measuring devices -
Does anyone know of websites with plans and discussion
of various rainfall detectors and measuring devices
[with electronic output for Basic Stamp processing] -
I've thought of a microphone on a tin plate
which would detect intensity and nature of droplets
and distinguish hail from heavy raindrops... for
early detection before actual flow happens... and
of course wind must be ignored... as well as some
sort of counting tilt-bucket for gross flow.
Thanks...
