macro key operation

Hi,
I'm new to basic stamp and working on my first project - a load
controller for my air conditioner. I thought that the macro key
function would come in handy for debugging but I can't get it
to work.
Could someone please explain the operation of the macro key
function that comes with the windows version (v1.096)of the basic
stamp editor.
The explanation in the Parallax interface manual is somewhat
cryptic. It mentions that data can be transmitted to the program
during run-time but does not get into the specifics on how to
do this.
Do I need some routine in my program to accept data from the key-
board/macro key?
