Slightly off topic - source for electromagnets

My son is working on a micro-controller project at work and has a
need for about 25 small electromagnets that can be driven from the
micro (not directly, but through a power chip like a 754410).
He has been attempting to wind his own magnets without much success.
They must be about 1/2 inch in diameter or less. Can someone suggest
a source that might carry such an animal???
Thanks! You can reply off-list to cdavis@o....

I had this same requirement last year. Couldn't find anything - ended up
using the guts from a 12V solenoid and securing the 'plunger' core. This
worked reasonably well, but it always seemed like a less than ideal
solution. There are some very tiny solenoids around, should fit your 1/2"
requirement.

I have seen miniature relays with small coils, some with dual coils; it
might be practical to dissect them.

driver heads in old Dot-Matrix Printers! 9pin(9Coils) 24pin(24Coils).
Suggest source is local auctions and Garage Sales.
Happy Hunting.

My approach would be to purchase small, inexpensive electronic relays and
remove the electromagnets from them. A good surplus electronics house would
be my choice for this type of purchase. Common voltages include 6VDC,
12VDC, and 24VDC. An easy way to energize electromagnets from a
microcontroller is to use N-channel MOSFET's, just don't buy them surplus.
Let me know if you need additional information, I will help if I can!
