Toshiba T6963C LCD Graphics Controller Chip

Hi,
Has anyone out there had any experience using this IC?
I have a 240x64 graphics LCD hooked up to my BX24 and after quite a
struggle with the Toshiba data sheet, I seem to have it working well. The
problem is the speed or lack of it when writing to its graphic RAM. I can
watch it visibly write and clear lines on the display and no matter what I
do, it is slow.
Is this normal for a T6963C? I suspect no, and that it's my code but I
have no previous experience to fall back on.
