Controlling Thermal Printer?

Hi John,

Try searching the web for serial-interface printers. Some manufacturers
include Star Micronics, Seiko, MST and Psion.
The last two make small-footprint printers ;-) which could be OK for your
application. You'll have to use a MAX232/233 for interfacing to the Stamp,
which is TTL.

Cheers,

Mike

Has anyone ever tried to control a ticker tape thermal printer using a basic
stamp? I'm interested in making a hand-held data collection device that has
printout capability. Any ideas?

John Schulz

Is it RS-232 or otherwise ??

    FWIW -

EPSON (EPSON-Seiko) also makes OEM pos printers, and has a website.

You may find our EDE1400 serial to parallel printer interface handy for
your application. A datasheet is available from our website at
http://www.elabinc.com in the 'EDExx IC Family' section. Accepts serial
data at 2400 baud from Stamp and drives Centronics bus.

My current configuration is a Panasonic EPT2014S2H (2") printer with a
EPTR2100 controller board which accepts both RS-232 and Parallel inputs. I
am using the RS-232 option. I am having great trouble getting it to work and
I can't seem to find any help from Panasonic. Maybe I just don't know where
to look. Anyway, I'm looking for alternatives.

    John:
Maybe your printer needs the negative RS232 voltage level which the Stamp
cannot supply. The version 1.9 Stamp manual has an example of RS232 support
using an LTC1181 on page 14. I believe the manual can be viewed at the
    Parallax site.

    Hope this helps,
    Ray McArthur

Thanks Ray. Hmmm, not sure... I never thought of it. I think that's worth a
    try.
