jittering sensor and incandesent lights

After many times farting around with the boe bot kits ir recievers i
got pissed of, tryed it a diffent way and melted the recievers(
Woops). So i attempted to make a Ir sensor with good sucsess,
almost. I Made a 38 khz signal with a 555 and and ir led. I used
a IR module( the ones from radioshack). The sensor works great but
only when pointing near a incandesant light.v Why is this ? is it
just the angle i have the eniter and reciever.?
Any Help is good.
