Newbie - BS2 has never responded to pbasic editors

I've searched the list and can't seem to find a clear answer to this
one.

I can't get my BS2 to respond to the pbasic editors.

Here is what I've tried and think I know.

1) I've used 3 computers (1 was a laptop which I hear can give
problems). I am not in a DOS box of windows when using the DOS version
of the editor.
2) I've tried the Windows version of the editor.
3) I've called parallax tech support to verify that I've wired the BS2
correctly. (4 serial lines, power and ground 9V).
4) Checked the battery.
5) I am getting a steady 5V on the output (forget what the pin is
called).
6) I think the serial cable is wired correctly for the loop back
because the windows pbasic editor recognizes the port but can't get a
response from the BS2.

Any suggestions? Is there any way to determine if the BS2 is alive or
burned out?

Thanks in advance,
Ron Johnson

I'm getting the standard "Hardware not found". That would probably
help everyone who is attempting to help!

Sounds like a bad cable or battery.
