Caryatnid.
Sure. MS Visual Basic 6.0 Pro has the MSComm Control.
You can get VB6.0 Pro by itself, or as part of Visual Studio 6.
VB6 has a complete environment, including editor, GUI builder,
EXE generator.

The best thing to do is find a student version of Visual Studio -- many
college bookstores have it. It includes VB, Visual C and a bunch of other
stuff. I was thinking it was under $100 at one time.
VB comes with everything you need, although the basic versions don't support
some features.

Visual Basic is an integrated development environment (IDE) for
Microsoft Windows that uses an enhanced object oriented version
of BASIC. To get the mscomm control you usually need to buy the
"Professional" version (at least that was the case up thru Ver. 4).
If I were you, I'd consider buying an older version to save some
$$. Any version 4 and above (Professional) will probably do
everything you'd want to do. You can currently find unused
copies of Version 4 on Ebay for less than $50 while the latest
and greatest version runs over $300.

Michael is correct. You need the Professional version or higher to get the
MSCOMM control for serial comms.
I have version 6.0 professional and know that at least up to V6.0 you will
NOT get MSCOMM in the standard or learning versions. His suggestion to look
for a copy on Ebay, etc., is a good one. I paid well over $400.00 for my
copy when new.

It does NOT come with any version below the professional ones. The standard,
learning and student versions do NOT have MSCOMM in them along with a lot of
other features that are not available until you go to the professional
version. I ran into this when I purchased my V6.0. Originally I got the
standard version and when I began to develop the user interface for a basic
stamp controller I was working on, what a surprise to discover it did not
support the MSCOMM feature. I gave that version to my nephew and bought the
professional version so I would have it. Just because it is Visual Basic, it
does not mean that everything is there unless you spent the money for the
higher end versions.

I have not found any other way to get it and, I tried before going out and
buying a completely new package for several hundred dollars, believe me.

Actually I think Mabry sells another version of it -- They have alot of
add-ons for VB for various I/O functions.

I have the learning version. If I read this right it will replace functions
available with mscomm.
Thanks again
