12 Digit LED Display

I have a 12 digit LED display, but i really don't know how to use
it. I know of MAX7219 drivers, or 74HC595 shift registers to drive
them, and understand their circuity, but i need to know how the
display itself works.
It has 12 digits and 9 segments (both a period and comma) - and other
fuctions like Low Bat, etc. - With only 30 pins on the bottom of it.
Four are in common, as a ground i'm assuming, and the other 26 are
divided into 2 groups of 13. I can also tell by the chip that each
LED of each digit of the display is connected to the same LED on the
next digit. I mean, the bottom left LED of digit 1 connects the the
bottom left LED of digit 2 which connects to the bottom left LED of
digit 3....
Why is that? And how can i make it work properly? I'm probably
going to use the shift registers rather than the MAX7219.
