Improving audio quality

Hi, new the group here, and I've read some past posts about using
audio with Basic stamps...I have a setup working now but this
question is more about improving audio quality than Stamps.
I'm using a record&playback audio kit from Mondotronics, and
recording audio line-in using a 1/2-hacked mono audio cable from my
computer. The 2 ISD chips I'm playing with are 1000AP and 1020AP.
Also using a 16-ohm speaker with my BS2/audio circuit.
Volume is good, but sound quality is only OK -- it basically sounds
like the sound is coming through a kid's walkie-talkie. There seem to
be a number of factors that could be affecting it:
* the ISD chips used
* speaker used
* the record kit (it does feel kinda cheap)
* the audio files from my computer (bit rate, etc)
Any audio 'war stories' would be appreciated (setups that work/have
worked great for you) or just general suggestions. Looking forward to
the list!
