Dead BS2 ???

Hi all,

I have a BSII, with Parallax's carrier board, and have been trying all the
following:

- 2 computers, 2 different serial ports on each
- 5 serial cables
- 2 9V batteries (new)
- Windows and DOS interfaces

and I still cannot get the BSII recognized. The program sees the DTR/DCS
link and indicates "BS2 detected on COMx: but not responding...etc". It says
this even with the BS2 not plugged in...as it only checks the DTR/DCS link.

The question: do I have a totally dead BS2 ? Is there a sure way to know ?

Also, could someone with more experience indicate the BS2's sensitivity to
static discharges?

Thanks,

Mike

I have yet to fry a Stamp and I handle them all the time.

Check to see if you have 5V available on the voltage output pin. That would
indicate if the regulator is functioning or not. If not, supply 5V regulated
to the 5V pin and see if that makes the Stamp work. If so -- bad regulator.
I have heard it is pretty easy to pop the regulator, but I have not done
this (of course, I usually use a 5V supply -- usually).

If you have 5V, then the next thing I would check would be the clock with a
    scope if you have one.

    Just my two cents.

My #1 lesson for "bad" stamp:

Check and make sure it's not backwards.

I do this all the time. It doesn't hurt it to have the pins reversed so
far as I can tell, but it won't work either. :)

    Hi Al,

Thanks for the tips - I have just checked the regulator, 4.94V which makes
it good. The clock check will have to wait, as my scope is out on loan at
    the moment.

    Cheers,

    Mike

Its probally not dead. If your pc say it see's the stamp but it says
it's not responding and the automatic port selection is selected, it can
give you a bogus message. Don't worry, try going to the editor in your
stamp II program and select preference. Select your com port. Try
    that,..if not , e-mail me back.

    Mike:

I've found the pin trim length to be somewhat variable on the BS2s that I've
used. A couple of times I've received BS2s with significantly different pin
trim lengths from one side of the board to the other. This can lead to the
user inserting the board into the socket so that it is level to the eye,
however one row of pins is not fully seated in the socket. This can appear
to be a DOA stamp. Verify that the stamp is fully seated within the socket.
    Just a thought.

    Cheers.
