Reading optical quadrature encoders?

Has anyone used a stamp to read quadrature encoders? I'd like to be able
to get meaningful position information from several US Digital optical
encoders...are there any dedicated chips for this? Any info at all would be
greatly appreciated...

Still in the dark, Duncan

This topic has come up often on the list. Take a look at the archives. I
have some code posted that is good for slow motion at
    http://www.emesystems.com/BS2misc.htm#twobit encoder
You can also find info in Scott Edward's app note at:
    http://www.parallaxinc.com/downloads/acrobat/st_app2.pdf
Oops, I just tried that last link to Scott's app note #2 and it is not
there after the reorganization. Maybe it is on Scott's site or at the N&V
    site.

I have done this with the HP2000 quadrature decoder attached to the US
Digital SP512 encoder (i think this is the part number). This is not really
what you asked however because the encoder is not directly connected to the
Stamp. Just thought you would like to know it can be done. My hardware
    solution is most likely overkill.
