Anyone know where I can get a relatively cheap (preferably surplus) 4x40 LCD
Display, with a backlight would be nice, too.
Also, speaking of surplus, I meant to post this a long time ago but forgot,
one of our local surplus store has about 6 or 7 486 based SBC's with built
in ethernet for $59. The place is called HSC Electronic Supply and the
phone number is (707) 792-2277 in case anyone is interested. They also have
some panel PCs with built in LCD display's, some of which are touchscreen
and they range from 386 to Pentium.

The 486 sounds like the Epson computers that Halted has been selling for
a couple of years. It is a cute little machine and it is what I use to
program my Basic Stamp. My only complaint was that I could never find a
floppy drive for it. I hook up a parallel port Zip drive whenever I want
to transfer data. Epson made these to control cash registers.
The panel PC are from http://www.advantech.com/ but I don't know anything
about them.

EIO has one for $20, BL too :

The 4x40 displays are driven differently than other 44780 LCDs. They have
two controllers, each with its own enable line...

Marlin P. Jones has a 4X40 Hitachi 44780 for $7.95
