I recall a really cool 1200bps packet modem from PacComm called
PicoPacket. It wasn't cheap ~$500 w/o battery pack, but it was tiny and
effective. See www.paccomm.com - the design and components are described
including the 12 channel gps unit.

Also, see www.tapr.org (Tuscon Amateur Packet Radio club). They describe
a PIC controlled remote packet device that can interface with serial gps
units and describe an inexpensive gps unit from Motorola (~$130 ??).

you might try 'Navtech' for gps stuff
they have a wide sellection, I don't know if the
    prices are rock bottom though.

Check out Timeline, Inc. I just purchased two Rockwell Jupiter GPS Receivers
from them at $69 each. They are approximately 1 1/2" x 3". Of cource you
will need an antenna. Find Timeline at:

    www.digisys.net/timeline

    I hope this helps

    thanks for into

I assume nmea means you send it a character string and then you parse a
    response ?

does Jupiter work as advertised ?

    documentation any good ?

what did you do for antenna ?

talk to it at what baud rate?

    thanks

Correct. NMEA is a standard the specifies the sentence structures that
navigation devices should send. Almost all GPS receives adhere to the
    standard.

    >does Jupiter work as advertised ?

    Yes - mine did

    >documentation any good ?

get the following docs. They contain anything you ever want to know about
    the Jupiter

Zodiac GPS Receiver Family Designers Guide - (142 page)
    http://www.unitronic.de/rockwell/pdf/gps/Zodiac%20DG_GPS-33.pdf

Zodiac Serial Data Interface Specification - (84 page)
    http://www.c2-tech.com/~steveb/ka9mva/zodiac.pdf

    Manual - (18 page)
    http://www.unitronic.de/rockwell/pdf/gps/gd003g.pdf

    >what did you do for antenna ?

Buy one. $30 to $70. be sure to match the antenna connector to the Jupiter.
    It uses a SMA connector.

    >talk to it at what baud rate?

standard bauds. 4800 is the 'standard' GPS receiver NMEA sentence output.

I urge you to have a look at the wealth of material on GPS receivers and GPS
    in general at:

    www.joe.mehaffey.com

    and the news group

    sci.geo.satellite-nav

    Hope this helps.

Has anyone written source code to have a BASICSTAMP read a GPS output,
    and pick out one
    piece of information.

    Tim,

There's a useful code example posted on our web site <www.decadenet.com>,
near the bottom of the BOB-II description page. The title is: "GPS Data
    Overlay Code Example".

Tim what piece of information and in what sentance is it? I am writing code at this moment on a laptop to read GPS data into an array and take the info and use it. I have some earlier programs that all they do is read and take bits of each sentence and use the info easily adapted to your use.·It is for a BS2, but the simplier code you need will work on BS1. Making GPS guided R/C car and next year an r/c airplane. Drop me an email here or mklarich@stoneflyers.com and tell me what part of the sentence you need.

That may not work with all GPS recievers. Many will only send sentences at
the NMEA standard, 4800 baud. The BS1 is limited to 2400 baud.

Sorry about that I have a couple BS1 but haven't even looked at them yet, been too busy using my BS2 for my GPS project. Cancel that statement about the BS1 working because I know on my etrex summit by garmin it comes out at 4800 baud and there is no option to slow it down.

I think some of the OEM units can have the baud rate changed. Technically,
if it is not 4800, it's not NMEA.
