Hi,
Most commercial airliners do not use GPS. The FAA has not universally
approved it. It is used on smaller private planes and jets. The US Military has
the
option to degrade the GPS System or shut it off whenever it wants to. It is
their system and we just get to borrow it. If they turned it off for a security
issue, what would happen to all the planes in the air flying in the soup
(Clouds)? Not reliable enough so they use their own NAV systems.
The airliners use a very expensive Inertial Guidance System. It uses Ring
Lasers and all sorts of precision junk to keep track of where they are and where

they want to go.

The Hijackers just input the coordinates of the targets and Viola the plane
flew there on auto pilot. Im sure they hand flew the planes when they had a
visual on the targets.

The newspapers should be more careful about whipping up this type of
hysteria.
Remember the job of the News Industry is to sell advertising. They don't make
any money reporting news. Good news docent sell.

With no GPS they would read maps...so lets ban maps..then they would stop to
ask directions.....so lets make it illegal to give dirrections...etc...etc..

Sorry for the tirade but this kind of thinking (Not yours Kenneth) is as much
the problem as the terrorists are.

Nuff said.

Hi Kenneth,
Sorry for the outburst, but it was building up and just slipped out. Ill save
it for another forum.
Unfortunately I don't know much about RC servos ant stuff.

Sorry, you might as well shut down this entire list. We don't know, for the
most part, who any of these people are, or how they make use of any of the
info disseminated on this forum. You're fighting a losing battle.

That exact thought and some peculiar e-mail requests from foreign lands [like
"How do I control a model rocket with GPS and a BASIC Stamp?] caused me to
delay publishing our GPS code [in Nuts & Volts magazine] for a long time.

In the wake of 9/11, the war in Afghanistan, and recently the liberation of
Iraq, I think Americans have become more diligent as far as security issues. I
have forwarded suspicious/scary e-mails to the FBI, and even called the
Dallas office over a phone call I received from a person who wanted to control a

large (10 feet) flying plane with GPS to "drop humanitarian aid." My problem
was that the "aid" packages in his plan were about the size of soda bottles. My

guts told me that one couldn't put enough aid in package that size to help
one person, but one could put enough poison in it to kill thousands....

We at Parallax hope that anyone using our products -- and even those of our
competitors -- is doing so only for peaceful purposes that benefit mankind.

Dear Kenneth,
Just a personal view point on your comments to the group. I think you
should treat YOUR comments with a little bit of care as a lot of us make a
living with GPS. The work that has been published on the web with the STAMP
and GPS is nothing compared to some of the Garmin's,Trimble's, NAVSYS,
Magellian, etc companies work and development, not to say the work with the
STAMP is not great. So, I say, seen th4ese comments before on the e-group
and should be kept on a lighter note.

...and they can (and do) jam GPS receivers around some sensitive locations
