Thank you all for your kind responses. I've decided to go ahead
with opto-isolation. The vellum-kit relay board did, in fact, make
use of the 2803's internal diode protection, so I guess it just wasn't
enough, or perhaps I did something a long time ago to weaken my
stamp.
Thanks Weyoun7 for your suggestion of putting 220 ohm resistors on
the I/O lines, I will implement that in addition to the isolators.
