I have to assume it's just a coincidence, but since subscribing to the
Stamps e-group list, I'm getting more spam than ever before. Anybody else?
Parallax?
Thanks.

on the subject of spam, the thing that really confuses me about spam on a
mailing list is that someone will spam the list once leaving one piece of
junk mail in everyone's inbox. Yet as soon as it is posted all of a sudden
the list is bombarded by people complaining about this one email therefore
filling up the list with ten or more emails complaining about how the spam
is offensive and is cluttering up their mail.
I have yet to see a keyboard that does not have a delete key. I have also
never seen an email client that does not allow you to delete messages.
These two features found on every computer and operating system that has an
internet email system are a very effective means to get rid of the offending
mail and never have to look at it again. I don't know if some people have
not yet figured this out or if it is not documented well enough. Maybe
these people's delete key does not work? Maybe they just like to rant and
rave and complain about trivial things therefore adding to that which they
are so vehemently complaining about. Do these people call customer service
for every single piece of junk mail they receive at their postal address?
Unfortunately, like postal junk mail, spam is a part of life on the
internet. If you do not like spam then do not open up an email account.
Its that simple. If you do not like someone's particular email that they
posted on the list then please deal with them in private, do not feel the
need to exert your frustrations on the list in effect spamming the list with
your unsolicited comments.
Additionally, some people find interesting things on the web they think
others on the list might find interesting as well. They in turn post the
URL for others to see. They are not making money off of this, they are just
trying to share with the list, is that not what it is for? I would really
like for this activity to not be discouraged as this is a very technically
minded crowd who come across items in their searches that I myself have
found interesting.
Feel free to flame me all you want for my post, but please spare the list
and email me to my email address.

Steve -
I would concur. I also suspect that's why many have unsubscribed. Too bad,
too.
I just set up filters with Eudora, since so many of them have something in
common <shrug>. Just downloaded 47 messages from my ISP. There were (say) 8
pieces of spam. After looking at the headers, 6 of the 8 could be sent to
my spam file with one filter, the others I manually moved.
Generally I can find fifteen minutes or so to go through the 30 or 40 spams
which collect during the week. I sift through the spam file - if there is
anything worth reviewing sobeit. Otherwise it's SELECT ALL ==>> TRASH boom
! I can't
even be bothered to deal with it on a daily basis.
I just accept it as part of the "price" of using the Internet. No more or
less than those stupid pieces of paper which used to fall out of "FREE"
tech journals. At least
now they come in a cello-wrapped packet. With those I can generally tell by
looking at the front and back offerings either: 1) if it looks interesting,
or 2) if I know where it came from. If not =>>>> TRASH - same as the
Internet spam.
Spam, for me, is universal. It extends from the unsolicted phone call at
6:00 PM
when you are sitting down to dinner, to the obtrustive billboards on the
highway, and the various commercials on TV with suggestive sexual
innuendos, on to the junk
mail in the mail box (whether USPS or Internet), along with many other
venues;
I just don't have the time for any of it.
OTOH, the direct mailers and advertizing companines get paid huge bucks by
corporations and PACs, big and small, to keep up the practice. As much as
I'm apolitical, I have tip my hat to even the thought of campaign spending
limits. If there was exactly such a limiting practice with other spam, we,
the consumers, MIGHT have a chance.
All spam should die a natural death - same as this thread <smile>.
'Til then, TRASH it all ! If we could ONLY re-cycle it and harness the
energy and dollars put into it - we'd all be rich !
Just my unsolicited spam-like 2 cents <g>, YMMV as always.

In the last few weeks we have receiving spam almost daily. Most have Yahoo
addresses. Could it be a result of being on this list?
TIA,

I suspect that the Yahoo addresses on the spam you
have received are, like most spam from and reply-to
addresses, faked.
The spam is probably NOT from being on this list. I am
one the list plus typically post at least once a week,
but can not recall receiving ANY spam on my Yahoo
account, which I use to access this list. I do receive
"Yahoo Delivers" ads, but then I get sale ads in my
Mail Boxes Etc. non-virtual mailbox too. This is much
less than on certain other <cough hotmail cough> free
email services, on which I can count on hundreds of
spams per month.

join the list, scam the list of members, then split.

Quite true, but the full membership list for BasicStamps isn't available to
the members of the list. The spammer would have to harvest addresses from
mail sent to the list. That's a very inefficient approach. We have been
spammed by a well intentioned seller of BasicStamp (or related) materials
in the past, over a year ago, maybe two. He learned his lesson *VERY* well.
Most spammers harvest their addresses from article headers on Usenet. Some
buy CDs full of addresses harvested from this source. If you post to the
Usenet newsgroups and use your real address in the From: field, you will
have serious spam very quickly.
