When i try to download program i get Stamp detected but not
responding on COM1 Check power supply. I am using a straight
through cable and a ac adapter? I'm running on
WinNT 4.0 sp 5 and the Basic Stamp Editor 1.091 beta.

Comments
allow a 9V battery to be plugged in and the voltage regulator on the chip
drops it down to 5V. (at least thats how I understand it) Depending on
which stamp you have, they require different amounts of current of which
your ac adapter power supply may not be able to provide. I think the bs2sx
needs at least 60 mA power supply but I may be wrong.
Else, you might try setting the editor to transmit on com2 in case you have
the cable attached to the wrong serial port. Obviously check the cable
connections in case you haven't yet. I hope this helps.

Is this version supposed to run on NT? I know NT can tie up access to the
serial port, check to be sure no other program is using the port (modem,
mouse, palm software, etc.)
Duncan
Basic Stamp Editor 1.091 Beta is listed to support 95/98 and NT

The ac adapter can supply 300 ma which should be enough for bs2sx. But i
will try a battery later today.
How can you specify a com port in the editor?

I tried to run from another pc Win98 400 MHz with 98 MB ram with the
following results:
From Basic Stamp Editor 1.091 beta
if i click on identify button i get Found BS2SX-IC (firmware v 1.0)
i set edit pref to auto detect and BS2SX
after i click run i get:
dialog => Basic Stamp II detected but not responding on COM1 check
power supply.
after i click ok i get
dialog (Basic Stamp editor) with following list
Create to FormCreate:18
FormCreate to Open:0
Open to FormShow:5
FormShow to InitVitalSettings:5
InitVitalSettings to DoSerial:0
DoSerial to EnableDisableStatus:41821
EnableDisableStatus to Create: -755927564
Then Debug Terminal #1 is displayed.
When i apply power to Stamp Activity Board the greeb led is on and i
can click the 4 buttons and each led turns on.
But nothing else works?????
Both LM2936 5v reg. and 24LC16B/SN get hot to the touch the PBASIC
chip doesn't get as hot but is warm.
What other test can i do

com1 or com2... If that doesn't work, try a different serial cable, or at
least track down the pinouts and make sure the cable works. I don't know
what else that you can test. Try connecting only to the basic stamp
through the carrier board without any extra hardware and make sure there is
no bent pins on the stamp. Although unlikely, you might try to reseat the
stamp in it's socket. Perhaps it wasn't making a connection... Good Luck
tracking down the problem.. If it turns out to be a bad stamp, let me know
how consulting with Parallax pans out.

I have the same trouble with a k6 machine running windows 98. I have found
that a rs232
in not necessarily a rs 232 as far as the pins go, I have not fixed the
problem yet, but will
put the findings on the site...........jwh
I got an answer from tech support. All i had to do was change the extension
of my program files from bs2 to bsx.
I am now able to download and run programs.

I have a BS2SX, and I "had" the same problem. What I think you should
do first is make sure you did not burn up your stamp. (As I hear people do
it alot, but I never have :) ) To do that, you need to have the newer
windows stamp edator. If that is what you are using, click on the "ID" tag
at the top of the screen. If it tells you that it cannot find the
stamp,....... you just may be out of luck. As for the power, I use a 9V just
fine. (then again I use BOE) But it can handle just a little bit over 5V, to
a little over 12V ( I am not sure about the ending range, but to be exact,
check the manual) It works great with that.
Another thing is, if you have to much stuff hooked up to the boards
power supply, (VIN, VDD) then it will draw WAY to much current, and will
take all the power from the stamp, wich is not a good thing. What are you
running on your board? Servos will defenatly eat it up, I know this from
experence. Just make a power supply for what ever you are using one the
board. If you are not using the boards power, I do not know what to tell
you. Hope you find out what is wrong.

PS) You did save the code in SX right? Because if you did not, it will give
you the same message.
