I am coming to the rope's end trying to get the app mod LED
driver to work, all I want to do is send the max7219 a number based
on input recieved from a keypad and count the numbers down. The
numbers are all in 50 units incs up to 500. Can anyone help?

Umm, you're already using the Scott Edwards code? I used the SE app note
with no problems...make sure you've got it wired right and it only supports
common cathode LEDs. If you're more specific about what's happenning I'm
sure someone here can be of assistance.
