Caller ID is described in some detail in Popular Electronics, August 1996,
    pp. 45-49 and 76.
That article includes plans for a Caller-ID decoder that interfaces to a
    PC.
The baud rate is 1200, the modulation standard is Bell 202, and each
message includes a length marker and a checksum.
Special modem chips such as the Motorola MC145447 and MC14LC5447 are used
to collect the data, which is sent on the
    phone line- between rings.
In fact, a good way to learn more about Caller ID is to read the data
    sheet for.the MC14LC5447.
I may be able to scan the article for you.
    Let me know.
    Thanks

I have saved the scanned pages to the the files section of the EEdesign
    list at Egroups.
I guess you can subscribe to the list, download the pages and then
    un-subscribe.
If for some reason this does not work, send me an E-mail at
    eedesign@h... and I will
send the scanned pages to your email address as attachments.
    Thank-you

I ordered a copy of PE Aug 96, but if you could scan it for me it would save
some time. What are the Bell 202 standards? How do they differ from RS232?
The data sounds as loud as the ring ie. 48V + 48V when I monitor it with an
amp. Also I hear a tone before the data starts. Bill

    It is not a posting.
Go to the File section and you will see 5 files called "CallerID" one
    through five.

I want to build an intelligent caller ID box that will screen calls
and shunt various callers immediately to an answering machine without
ringing the phones in the. Sometimes we get 6 - 8 telemarketer calls
a night. I've looked at the caller ID project on the LOSA list but it
uses a part that is no longer available. Anyone know of any other
caller ID decoders that are easily married to the stamp?
