ive used the grayhill rotary encoders, i get mine from digi key,
the part # is gh6102-nd this unit has 32 positions per rev. cost 20.56
the next unit is part # gh6101-nd it has 16 positions per rev. cost 20.56
it uses 2 pins of the stamp or pic, and needs 2 resistors only.
the nuts & volts stamp app. has the code for its use, its really easy.

degrees of rotation? I have an application where I need to slowly
turn a unit under test and make measurements at certain specific
degrees of rotation. The unit under test does have an index feature
to reference a zero degree point.
So, I'm looking for an absolute encoder that would be easy to
interface with a BS2 and e.g. a 2x16 Seetron display to read "XXX
degrees" on one line and the measurement results on the next line.

Does it have to go a full 360 degrees? If not, could you use a pot or
inclination sensor?
