I haven't actually had a chance to do any experimentation, but I know Analog
Devices manufactures accelerometer chips that measure physical shock and
acceleration. Among their products, they have "evaluation boards", which
apparently interface nicely to the Basic Stamp.

As I said, I haven't had a chance to do any experimentation with these, but
I thought the info might be useful to you. I also have no affiliation with
said companies, in case this sounds like a plug.

Did anyone come up with an anser for this.

I think Analog Devices has stuff in their app notes about using their ADXL
series of accelerometers to measure vibration. Check the data sheets for
    these devices too.

    Hi,

I got that ADXL chip from Analog Devices very nice too, just would like to
mention that there is existing equipment on the market called "Impax"
they're used on cold forming machines, like National, Nakashimada, Malmudie,
etc, this thing shuts down the machine if the recoil from forming is outside
a pre set band. A tooling crash costs from $1000 to $30,000, not counting
    lost production.
