Autonomous Fighting Robot Sensor Question

My good friend and I are building an autonomous fighting robot for the October 17th Engineering Expo and Antweight Challenge and we are using a single devantech ultra sonic·range finder mounted on a servo connected to a bs2.
We are starting the communication with the distance finder and have found that when we run the debug it will give the "1", a null reading, 9 times out of ten.· The weird thing is that the one time every so often, not consistantly, it will give a logical reading.· Does anyone have any experience with these sensors, and would have some advise for working out the bugs?
Thank you,
