In case anyone else is interested in measuring moderate currents using a BASIC stamp (preferably with an ADC), check out the following link:

They feature a line of Hall-effect current sensors which isolate the current source from the digital logic. In addition, they output a voltage in the 0-5V range, with 2.5V being zero Amperes.
