Yes, programmed with Parallax intellectual property (PBASIC interpreter).

I thought thats what the OEM was for.

If I am getting this right (please correct me if Im wrong) the interpreter needs PBASIC and it holds no info regarding the program downloaded from the computer.· The EEPROM stores only the program downloaded from the computer and is accessed by the interpreter wich actually runs the program.

Is the only way I can make my own circut is by using the $25 chip made by Parallax?· Are there any other chips that work on the OEM or is there a way I can load PBASIC onto a blank chip?

You cannot load PBASIC onto a blank chip -- only we can do that. If you want to buy just one chip, yes, the cost is $25. If cost is the issue, you may want to consider the SX chip (not the BS2sx); we have the chips, programming tools, and great training materials.

The SX looks good. How are they connected to the computer? In the kits I didnt see anything that connected to a serial cable.

The SX connects to the computer through the SX-Key...When it's mounted on the SX Tech Board, anyway...

If you want a bigger prototype area, you can use our GPSX which plugs into an ordinary breadboard. http://www.al-williams.com/gpsx.htm·(no picture, but this is based on our GPMPU40 at http://www.awce.com/gpmpu40.htm, and you can see how it works there).

Keep in mind that programming the SX is not nearly as easy as a basic stamp. The SX key is about $90.

But after that, the chip is less than $5 and far more powerful than a stamp.....but depending on what you are doing.....the power of the SX may be overkill.

Also consider your time......If you are a beginning programmer, writing code for the sx can easily take 4 times longer to do the same task on a stamp.

Yeah, it will be awhile before I can afford a Key. When I get any spare time in class (waiting for parts) Ill look into assembly code and see what I can do with it.

The best deal, if you're looking at the SX...Is to buy either the SX Tech Tool Kit, or the LITE Kit.· The SX Key is included in both, and they are only $129.00 & $99.00 respectively.· Plus you get the chip, programming board, cable, etc.
