New project: Autonomous flying machine

This project will be a challenge, I intend to build a vertical lift-off autonomous flying machine with onboard video and still cameras.

Already underway, I have purchased a Super Tigre .40 model plane nitro engine (1.2 hp), 10x9 prop, starter motor, glow plug starter, control cabling, extra servos, and an additional BS2.

Yesterday I fired up the engine and tweaked the carb for optimal performance; I was very impressed with the power and wind velocity created at full throttle!· Using a fish scale I measured the lifting force of the engine at 4.2 lbs.

Design and construction are underway, I will post a web link shortly to the project page.

Hi, I am also working on a similar autonomous project.
I am using a custom brushless motor from "gobrushless.com" with a castle creations phoenix 25 ESC.
6g micro servos and carbon fiber frame. With the advent of lithium polymer batteries, I can get a good 30 minutes flight time.·I'm however still looking for an lightweight and inexpensive laser raging module. I considered going gas/nitro, but these brushless setups are wisper silent. My biggest concern is proper charging of the lithium cells with an onboard solar charging mudule which I can't seem to get working yet. I'm using the BS2sx with a parallax servo controller. But might upgrade to the 2p for power consumption reduction later on.

Best of luck and keep us posted.

P.S. Seems your stamp chat is closed? Wanted to check that out! hehe

    Jon

Jonny555, good luck on your project also, got any links to pictures?

Stamp chat is always online, however I just recently did some reorganizing of my web server, you may have caught me in transition at that time.

I started this project 1 month or so ago. Most of the electronics are on my breadboard ATM, not much to look at. I will however be happy to share pictures when my project is more "presentable"·yeah.gif
I checked out your page and your project is looking great!
Which GPS modules have you considered? So far I have narrowed the field to the Laipac TF-30, but have yet to make a move.
