AC Frequency Control?

Hi there, I have some experience with the BS2 (mostly controlling fuel injectors and stuff like that), and I have a question about possible application.
I am interested in building a circuit which produces a 120V alternating current, with the frequency directly controllable over a wide range (e.g. instead of 60 Hz, I would like to punch in a number and have the circuit produce AC current at that frequency). The program itself seems rather simple(or maybe not?), but I have no experience connecting something like the stamp to wall current.
If anyone has any insight it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Bill
