Javelin Temperature

Hi,

Reciently, I touched the heatsinks on my javelin and discovered that its very hot. So hot that touching it is almost scalding. I was wondering what I should do because this really doesn't seem to be normal and is probably damaging my processor. Any help would be appreciated.

Jonathan

What do you have interfaced to the Javelin? The other devices attached to the Javelin, where do they get their power?

I had the javelin connected to the Parallax Servo Controller and was using 1 servo. The PSC uses its own power supply at 6v and was cool. Thanks for trying to help.

    Hi Jonathan,

Have you solved this? Reason I ask is I have been having similar issues. I have a Javalin just connected to a 6V battery, and serial programming cable, no pins (0-15) connected. The microprocessor gets hot quickly.

    Hi,
I had similar issues ... so i added a tiny Pager Motor (with a 1cm dia prop, motor is cheap $1) to the circuit that keeps the Javelin almost at room temprature all the time. The motor however uses a separate power source ... doesn't need much at about 1V it can throw in a blast of air. It is so light it does not even need a mount, it just hangs in the air with the suppport of it's own jumper wires. Further, added a DS1620 temprature thermostat and increased the fan speed when the temprature goes up.

The load on the Vdd seems to be completely responsible for the temprature rise .... So, Ideally the circuit should be broken down into independent blocks of sensors/actuators ... using their independent power source and a miniature controller like the Pic .... and talking to the Javelin through the Uart. But this could be an overkill for a small robotic application.

I'm new to the forum - but I have a VERY HOT Javelin Stamp. (Too hot to touch). It is not running anything - just sitting there powered up. Can some-one from Parallax let us know what to expect??
    Many thanks

    Hello all,

The Javelin runs normally (even when idling) at a higher temperature than our BASIC Stamp modules (the BASIC Stamp 2sx gets close to it though).

The normal running temperature is around 130-140 F (55-60 C).

If you're testing the temperature with your finger, it's going to feel really hot but it shouldn't burn your fingertip.

This is the normal temperature with the Javelin and we didn't have any reported problems with Javelin modules that were running continuously for several years.
We also conducted high temperature testing and the Javelin passed all of them successfully.

If you have any other concerns, please don't hesitate to contact me at aalvarez@parallax.com.

Thanks a lot - that really helps.

Just wanted to make sure that I wasn't looking at a problem.
