    Possible reasons :-

    1. maybe you plugged into com2 instead
    2. no power is going into the board ( feel the power regulator to see whether it is warm or hot )
    3. the SX chip was plugged in the wrong way ?

Where the sx key connects to the board, do you get 5 volts dc from vdd to vss?

What is the current draw on these boards.· I just looked and the voltagbe 4.98 until the sx-key is plugged in, then it drops to 4.5.· I'm using a 9v 400mA adapter.

On my system, when the sx key is connected and programming, it is using less than 200 mA.

Do you have an o-scope to see how "clean" the voltage is? 4.5 volts on a dvom could actually be far above and below that as the meter shows you the average reading.

Another thing to try is to use a fresh 9v battery connected to the SX Tech board, or did you say you already tried that?

If you use the 9 volt battery, connections to the regulator are as follows:

Viewing the regulator from above, the far left terminal is input (+9v) and the center terminal is ground with the far right terminal +5 volts output.

Do you have the SX Key plugged into the tech board correctly? It's counter intuitive but the logo goes down, components are up , to match the silk screened printing on both items. If so, maybe your com port isn't setup correctly. The SX tech board is plug and play, but I noticed the newer versions come without an insulated back. The solder joints are exposed, and you're supposed to have four little adhesive feet stuck on the back to raise it off the table. Just handling this particular board with bare hands will lock up the osc.
