Y-Axis Stepper Motor Broken
Hello everyone,
I was machining a poplar jig with a 1/16" bore when I noticed a clicking noise coming from the machine, synchronized with the Y-axis movement and occurring at regular intervals. I turned off the machine and went under it to see if the noise was synchronized with the rack and pinion. It wasn't, but perfectly synchronized with the motor gear.
I removed the motor and turned the shaft. It stuck in the same spot each time and was very difficult to turn. I have some NEMA 34 motors on hand, and they're not nearly as difficult to turn, so I assume this motor is faulty.
Has anyone experienced a similar situation or can offer a solution? I'll probably call and order another motor on Monday.

Yup, shorted winding.
You might get lucky and the short is in wiring you can access if you take the motor apart, where the wires exit the motor, or where they solder to the magnet wire.. Usually not worth it unless it gets you going faster. If it got really hot at some point, it's certainly junk.
If the motor frees up when unplugged then the motor is good. Problem would then be either cabling or the amplifier.
