Has someone tried Speech Recognition via Zero Crossing Analysis?

Hi,
while in search for literature about speech generation, I stumbled over an interesting rather simple method of speech recognition via analysis of Zero Crossings which was used in GDR. There is a claim to have achieved 97 percent recognition in a German description of 1987. The method splits the frequencies of the speech signal into 2 bands less or greater than 1kHz. For each of these bands they measure the frequencies of zero crossings.
