Generic ESP8266 instead of Parallax WX ESP8266

Can a generic ESP8266 be used instead of the official Parallax WX ESP8266?
I intend to use it on the Propeller Activity Board.
It won't be a direct fit, as pins are not physically aligned, but I was wondering if the software on the official WS ESP8266 can be loaded on a generic one, and how.
I have a couple of them at home, and I want to put them to good use.
