    My buddy's wife Kay is THE resident expert at Hughes & Raytheon for designing satellite circuitry for survivability from cosmic rays, ridiculous thermal extremes and mechanical vibration. So very geeky and yet very cool lady who's an absolute hoot to talk to! She just became the head of some international organization on the subject.

    Good to know. Now ask her about Single Event Upset. It's the one thing that can cause the most mild mannered sat to become HAL's best friend.

    such is the way with technology.
    in a discussion about data storage at work we were talking about how long a cd/dvd would last.
    in a controlled temperature and light exposure environment a cd/dvd would be readable for a couple hundred years at least.

    But and its a Big But. reader and computing technology develops far faster than than the usable life of the medium.
    in a couple hundred years would you be able to even find an optical drive let alone a computer that is backwards compatible enough to use it?

    so hats off to those of you who keep the old gear running, for you are preserving history!
