pasting code into discussion

I tried using the code formatter option, but it does not seem to like code being pasted into it.
I tried retyping the code into the discussion between the code format things, but it does not like when I hit enter for a new line. When I look at the preview it is one long line.
What am I missing?

Use the back-tick (`) key; it is the unshifted tilde (~) key on American keyboards. Put three, consecutive back-ticks on the lines above and below your code. I always do this manually because there are still problems with the behavior of the new forums code.
