QTI Analog to Digital

I have been trying to read input from my QTI sensor with no success. The premise is: charge the capacitor, then take a reading after 1 ms; the voltage read will depend on the resistance offered by the IR transistor. And when I meter the output pin, I do get a variable voltage; but I want it to be either a 1 or a 0, so I attached the output from the QTI sensor to the A/D converter. When I take a reading from that and try to display it, however, I get some gibberish. I assume that I'm getting some floating point value that the program doesn't know how to display properly, which would imply there is a problem with how I am trying to use the A/D converter. Sadly nothing is coming to my attention. Any ideas would be appreciated.
