Driving Laser diodes with P2

I'm looking for effective ways to drive a laser diode from a P2.
I need to vary the output of the laser at certain times.
I have several 20mW lasers that I can test with (built a constant current circuit to test that they work) but I will need 40mW and 60mW lasers too.
I have found some circuits that can drive lower powered lasers and Laser driver boards too.

I would like to use as few components as possible.
Would it be possible to use the PWM a DAC in the P2 to get a constant output for a laser with the P2?
Thanks in advance!

Until then, there are single chip ICs for that. Different parts according to power output and upper frequency modulation requirements:
