I tried ordering a Parallax kit from that same outfit a number of years ago and they just ended up canceling my order.

I believe they used the old 433MHz transceivers that they used to sell. Could be done easily with Xbee nowadays.
Correct - I used the old 433 MHz transceivers where you had to do your own checksums and data validation. It's so much easier today.
