We need to pull the tops off of those SMT header receptacles during manufacturing. They are only there to facilitate pick-and-place.
They can be seen as some kind of a "virginity certificate"; like to open my own bottle of wine, despite I had no opportunity of doing so, at least by the past two years...

Curiously looking at the pick tops mentioned, I noticed your board photo shows Rev B, whereas this forum thread title mentions Rev C.
