FTDI_232 DIY ugly USB>serial (5 hour project)

To keep the long story really short:

I needed one badly and fast to flash my ugly P1 board with @"Peter Jakacki" 's excellent Tachyon Forth.
I built one, very ugly, and it works!
Total cost $0,00 (all salvaged parts).
Total build time less than 5h (and that included finding and actual extraction of parts).
Tools used - same as with the ugly P1 board project.
Running Tachyon on my ugly.
Pics attached.

  • Nice one, Maciek, now you know more about ftdi circuits than most of us. Good to hear you're experimenting with tachyon - I've just started too, having used forth on other cpus. Do you have an application for this 'uglyprop'?
  • @bob_g4bby Thanks. I wish that was true but it's not the case, unfortunately.

BTW, since Wuerfel_21 mentioned Prop Tool supporting FTDI chips, before building this board, I tried to use the FT2232HQ mini module from FTDI, but no luck there. The Prop Tool couldn't recognize the P1 despite the proper com port settings and DTR line configured. But now, having built ugly usb>uart, I couldn't care less
