Plug-in wifi adapter for FLiP?

I'm looking for a wifi adapter that I can plug into the FLiP's microUSB (slave) port. There are plenty of such adapters available to talk to type A (master) ports, but I need something that will act as a master and recognize the FLiP's FTDI chip. I've looked at so-called OTG adapters for cell-phones, but it appears that the cell-phone itself has to be able to operate as a host, which the FLiP cannot do. Am I wasting my time in this pursuit?

My thought would be to look at one of the ~500 routers listed on the OpenWRT site, many have the wifi built-in

It's simple for the Prop Mini but by passing the USB or using the USB is complicated.

@Tubular suggestion is actually a very valid one. You could also use a ESP8266/ESP32 (no simple of the shelve solution, but you can build a stack):
