Theoretically it can matter. Current is generated when a conductor (like the coil wires) cut magnetic field lines (move through the magnetic field). If you have an "odd" coil shape, the amount of current produced will vary as different amounts of wire are moved through the magnetic field. Similarly, if the magnetic field is not uniform, the generated current will vary.
