Just an offhand thought, but could a prop device be built to plug into a PCIE x1 slot on the host PC's motherboard? How would you write the Windows/Linux drivers to interface with it?

And PCIE provides 3.3v power.
Another option would be PCIE->USB and USB->serial. Or maybe there's a chip that does PCIE->serial. or parallel.
There is at least one indeed; two serial links, up-to 16 Mbps each, and also other features too.

Hope it helps
P.S. Even better options/performance, from the same manufacturer:

All right!
Now, about drivers. How would I make a driver that talks to the prop via PCIE?
One could make a project with this that programs propellers! “Program your prop with PCIE x1!”
I was thinking this sounded cool up until this point. Why would anyone want that specific idea? Seems more difficult than USB, by far.
I could see this for something like a desktop oscilloscope though. Something like a cheap alternative to this guy: https://www.wuntronic.de/en/16-bit-digitizer-4-channel-1-gss-with-4-gs-memory.html
But that O-scope is FREAKING AWESOME!!
