QTI Sensor issue with Boe-Bot

I've tested four different bots with four different sets(4) of QTI sensors, and all of them have the same issue. The issue is the sensor only somewhat works if the sensor is extremely close to the surface. I followed the instructions, but I had to add three nylon nuts to each sensor to bring it closer to the surface.

Has anyone else experienced this issue? Any recommendations? Is this normal?

    What kind of reflective material are you using? Light, Dark?

    A competition mat for our middle school competition, paper, whiteboard, electrical tape, 20 other things. Either way, I get the same result.
